Martin Heck takes us on a journey with his beautiful videos in 4K

Martin Heck | Timestorm Films

Martin Heck is a globe-trotter who makes beautiful movies in 4K. Here are some of his most beautiful videos.

Martin Heck is an artist with two passions: Making movies and traveling. Add to that he has a great talent and you get great videos of Atacama, Patagonia or New Zealand.

He has done a lot since his first trips and so I have prepared a selection of my preferred ones. This choice is of course subjective so if you like his work, go to his page Vimeo to watch some others.

“Patagonia 8K” explores the beautiful and rough landscapes of southern Chile and Argentina. Shot in 8K resolution on a medium format camera it’s aimed to deliver the most realistic experience. Shot in 6 weeks, travelling over 7500km from Santiago to Punta Arenas we captured roughly 100.000 still frames that combine into this timelapse video.

“Volcano Calbuco erupted on April 22, 2015, for the first time in four decades. Located close to the cities of Puerto Varas and Puerto Montt in southern Chile. We spend the prior couple of days on the neighboring volcano Osorno (~20km linear distance) shooting timelapses. After an amazing night under the nightsky we took the cable car downwards after a delay caused by repairs. Already late we headed south to catch the ferry on Routa 7 down to Patagonia. After 10min on the ferry we noticed a massive, almost nuclear looking cloud boiling upwards just were we left a few hours ago. Frenetically looking for a good outlook we then rushed to the only non-forested place to get a decent view of the show. We quickly put every bit of camera-equipment we could find on the constantly growing mushroom-cloud. We shot timelapses in 8K and 4K with a Pentax 645Z and Canon 6D. On the A7s we shot 4K video to the Shogun. We filled almost all of our memory cards in the prior night so I had to do backups while shooting all this stuff. This was for sure the most incredible show I’ve ever seen. I think this is a one in a lifetime event and I am so happy that we were able to capture it in all its glory.”

AWAKENING | NEW ZEALAND 4K from Martin Heck | Timestorm Films on Vimeo

“Back in early September I got the chance to do a quick trip to Iceland. On the day of departure my local camera store got a brand new Nikon D850 for me (2days before official release!!) and I was able to bring it straight to Iceland to shoot some nice timelapses along the trip. It was my first time there and we were hoping to get some insane Aurora since a CME (Coronal mass ejection) was aiming toward earth. We apparently got some insane KP values over KP8 but we were kinda disappointed how moderate the aurora actually was. Figured it was so strong it got pushed into lower latitudes actually. But overall it was an incredibly trip for me and surely just a taste of what all of Iceland has to offer. Expect me to go back there and shoot more!”

The Atacama desert is home to the darkest and cleanest skies in the world. A view to the nightsky rewards with uncountable numbers of stars and fantastic nebulas in one of the most quiet a empty places on earth. Not a single noise distracts from the grand show the nightsky has to offer.
The environment is harsh though. Filmed in freezing temperatures, altitudes up to 5000m/16000ft, salt lakes and icy slopes, the Atacama is not friendly to life and equipment. Though it provides without doubt for epic and vast vistas of one of the greatest landscapes on earth.
